Report: Tecatito Corona Set for Mexico Return After Four Years

Jesús Manuel “Tecatito” Corona is set to return to the Mexico national team after four years away, according to TUDN reporter Gibrán Araige.

Araige reported on Wednesday, November 4 that Rafael Márquez will call up the Monterrey winger for the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals against Jamaica. The Mexican Football Federation has confirmed nothing yet.

Mexico’s official squad list is expected on Thursday, November 5, in the afternoon. Only that list will confirm or refute the report.

What Araige Reported

Araige reported that Márquez will bring Corona back to play on the right wing. The role would ask him to carry the ball down that flank and supply Mexico’s forwards.

Corona has not played for Mexico since June 2022. His return would be one of the biggest surprises of Márquez’s second squad in charge.

Mediotiempo published a corroborating report on the evening of November 4. That report also named Víctor Guzmán and Orbelín Pineda, which would give Monterrey three players in the squad.

A Four Year Absence

Corona’s last Mexico appearance came on June 5, 2022. He played 28 minutes in a friendly against Ecuador in Chicago, a match that finished 0-0.

Gerardo Martino was Mexico’s coach at the time. An injury in August 2022 then ruled Corona out of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Diego Cocca, Jaime Lozano and Javier Aguirre did not call him up after that. The winger, now 33, has waited more than four years for another chance.

He brings real experience if the call comes. Corona has 71 caps for Mexico, with 10 goals and 10 assists.

Why Márquez Would Turn to Corona Now

Corona has been a regular for Monterrey in Apertura 2026. He has played 13 league matches, starting 11 of them, as the team captain under Matías Almeyda.

He has two goals and two assists in the tournament. The numbers are modest, but his one against one dribbling is what keeps him in the team every week.

That skill answers a clear Mexico need. Márquez’s side scored only two goals across four matches in the September and October window.

October reporting from Mediotiempo said the coaching staff wanted direct competition for Roberto Alvarado on the right side. Corona is the natural candidate for that role.

What Comes Next

Mexico publishes its official list on Thursday, November 5. The selected players will then prepare for the two legs against Jamaica.

The first leg is on Saturday, November 14, in Kingston. The second leg is on Tuesday, November 17, at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Corona’s home stadium with his club.

The winner of the series advances to the Nations League Final Four. These are Márquez’s first official matches as Mexico head coach.

For now, the status stays plain. Araige reports that Corona is in, Mediotiempo reports the same, and the federation has said nothing yet.
