Former Tottenham Hotspur chairman Lord Alan Sugar has questioned the Spurs hierarchy over their tame treatment of Danny Rose.
Danny Rose sparked controversy earlier this season after the full-back questioned Spurs over their ambition, citing underpayment of players as well as reluctance to sign high profile players ‘who he does not have to google’.
Following the controversy, manager Mauricio Pochettino defended Tottenham from Rose’s comments but at the same time, the Argentine manager did not take any drastic action against the defender and he was even reintegrated into the first team immediately after returning from injury.
This approach of not punishing their players for potentially damaging comments has puzzled Sugar, who has told in a recent interview that had it been with any successful manager such as Sir Alex Ferguson then Rose will possibly have been punished more harshly than what he did at Tottenham.
Lord Sugar told in his interview with BBC, “If we go back to the great Sir Alex Ferguson [the former Manchester United manager] – I think you might agree with me here – if he had a player like Danny Rose make a statement like he did in the media he would have been dead meat, gone.
“And that’s what I can’t understand about the Tottenham hierarchy, really. Even though he’s a good player, even though you might need him when he comes back from injury. Putting that to one side, sometimes your pride and your dignity needs to send out a message to the others.”
Following his comments Rose is being linked with a move away from Spurs, with the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain mentioned as possible destinations for the attacking fullback.
