Former Newcastle defender Aaron Hughes has revealed that he will always have a “special connection” with the club.
The 38 year old Hughes, who is currently on the books of Scottish club Hearts, was part of the Magpies squad when they famously twice qualified for the Champions League under Sir Bobby Robson.
Hughes went on to become the first choice right back at the club and performed admirably before eventually being sold to Aston Villa in 2005.
During his career, Hughes has turned out for the likes of Villa, Fulham, QPR, Brighton, Mebourne City and Kerala Blasters before joining Hearts earlier on during the year.
Despite being in his late 30’s, he continues to play at the highest level and also represents the Northern Ireland national team in international matches.
“That was my first club and the place really where I went from being a school kid to an adult,” Hughes told The Guardian as quoted by The Chronicle.
“I grew up there, if you like. There is more to that than football; my wife is from there and my oldest daughter was born there.
“It was my first club and of course I love it but I had good times at Fulham, too.
“There will always be a special connection to Newcastle. Even just driving down from Edinburgh for the day, there is a special feeling around the place.”
