Liverpool star admits surprise at being included in the England squad

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez has admitted that he was surprised to have received a call up to the England national team for upcoming friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

He said: “It means a great deal for me personally. It has obviously been a dream of mine since I was a kid to represent my country at senior level.

“It was a surprise. I wasn’t expecting the call-up but it was great news for me and my family, all of those close to me, and it is a dream come true.”

The Liverpool defence has come under intense criticism this season for sloppiness and in spite of this, Gomez has been one of the few players from his teams backline that has shown promise.

After failing to make a single Premier League appearance for the Reds last season, he has managed to impressively rise up the pecking order at the club and has so far made eight Premier League appearances.

He is likely to make his debut for the Three Lions against either Germany or Brazil and has admitted that he is taken aback after receiving a call-up.
