Newcastle handed boost as they can land midfield target cheaply in January

Having failed to land Hamburg midfielder Lewis Holtby during the summer transfer window, recent happenings suggest Newcastle can land their man for less than £5million during the winter transfer window.

The contract of the German midfielder will expire at the end of the season, and the Bundesliga outfit will likely listen to offers in January in order not to lose him for free.

Holtby has been sparingly used this term, starting just 4 league games, and having been excluded from action in their last 2 games, Hamburg look to be preparing for life without him.

Newcastle and Bournemouth were keen on the former Tottenham midfielder in summer when he was reportedly available for £5million.

Despite failing to live up to his huge potential, the 3-cap Germany international remains a player capable of reaching the top if he’s afforded game time.

A return to the Premier League could also do the trick for Holtby, and Newcastle’s lack of plenty options in midfield shows they could do with a quality addition soon.

With his technical ability, defensive contribution, abilities to retain possession, tackle and score goals, the 27-year-old versatile midfielder seems like a gamble well-worth it.
