Arsenal legend Martin Keown has claimed that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino could be left with a nightmare of having to lose key players if they do not win silverware. The Lilywhites have not won a major trophy since 2008 when they claimed the English League Cup.

They have however managed to transform into a world class team under Mauricio Pochettino and showed that they can compete against the biggest sides in World football by defeating defending European Champions Real Madrid 3-1 in a Champions League clash on Wednesday.

Spurs have arguably three of the World’s best players at present in Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen and the trio have been linked with big-money moves away from North London.

Should Spurs fail to win trophies during the near future, it is easy to see these and other players being tempted by offers from other clubs as it could allow them improved chances of winning trophies as well as higher wages.

Keown said: “If this great Tottenham team does not win a trophy, there is every likelihood that it will get broken up.

“That has to be Mauricio Pochettino’s worst nightmare. But last night’s victory [against Real Madrid] will count for something. This result could be enough for Tottenham to push on again.”
