While a lot of Tottenham’s youth products on loan appear far away from getting a recall to north London, Connor Ogilvie could become one of the few that finally makes the Spurs’ grade going by his performances.
The 21-year-old left-back is currently on a half-season loan with League One side Gillingham, having spent the last 2 seasons with League Two’s Stevenage.
Tottenham handed Ogilvie a new 2-year deal in July, and there remains the possibility that he could still have his chance under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
However, it’s the Gills’ caretaker boss Steve Lovell that the former England youth international is currently impressing.
Ogilvie made his 17th appearance of the season when he came off the bench to impress in a 3-1 victory over Rotherham United on Saturday.
The fullback played in centre defence, and his versatility – a feature that would come very handy if he’s ever to make a senior team appearance for Spurs – earned plaudits from Lovell.
He told Kent Online: “Perhaps he was a bit unfortunate to be left out of the side but I told him in training on Friday that I think he is a better centre-half than left-back.
“I said he would get his opportunity and it happened. He came on and was magnificent.
“He won all his headers, he defended well and the boys gave him a round of applause and that lifts people.
“Connor isn’t the loudest but he goes about his business in a professional way and I was really pleased for him to come on and play the way he did.”
Ogilvie could stay at Gillingham till the end of the campaign or move to the Championship in January if a deal for him is offered.
While he’s not looking like a future Spurs star, his growth over the years suggests he could become a late bloomer and eventually prove himself in the Premier League.
