Liverpool legend Fowler defends beleaguered Dejan Lovren

Former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler has said that critics are wrong to make Dejan Lovren the scapegoat of the Reds woes this season.

Liverpool have begun the season in underwhelming form and were subjected to a 4-1 defeat by Tottenham last weekend.

One of the players who received scathing criticism during the aftermath of the game is Lovren who was personally responsible for Spurs first two goals on the day. The Croatia was substituted just after the half hour mark following his horror show.

Fowler believes that it is wrong to single out Lovren for criticism considering that the whole team were underwhelming.

He said: “I felt sorry for Lovren a little bit. Look, he didn’t have a good game, but it could have been anyone who got brought off.

“I felt for him. He’s probably taken the brunt of everything this week but it shouldn’t just be him. If we’re being honest, it wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t what we’ve become accustomed to. We didn’t play well enough as a team. A few players just never stood up.”
