Belgium national team boss Roberto Martinez has defended Jan Vertonghen following the defenders impressive performance while playing in a World Cup qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina this weekend.

Vertonghen who has making his 96 appearance for his country was responsible for allowing a goal to be scored due to some poor defending, however he did make amends by scoring the winning goal.

Following the game, Martinez defended Vertonghen saying, “Actually, this was Jan Vertonghen at his best. First go wrong and correct that mistake.

“As mentioned, football is a game of mistakes. You can make one, but then you will work to make up for it. If you can, you are an excellent player.

“That’s Jan, so I am already looking forward to the celebration for his 97-cap record that will take place against Cyprus on Tuesday.”

Vertonghen is a classy defender and the mistake was very uncommon, so he can be forgiven.  The 30 year old is regarded as one of the best defenders in the game at the moment and is expected to play a key role for Spurs this season as well as for the Belgian national team for their 2018 World Cup campaign.
