Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed that he thinks that Rafa Benitez will not remain as manager of Newcastle for long.
Benitez took over the Magpies towards the end of the 2015-16 season. Though he could not save the club from Premier League relegation, he won the Championship title in only his first full season in charge of the club and won instant promotion for the side.
Despite doing an impressive job as manager of the Tyneside club, the Spanish manager has indicated his frustration with the clubs board for failing to provide him with sufficient capital to invest in new players for the team. This has been viewed as a reason as to why he could depart the club in the near future.
As Benitez is regarded as one of the World’s best tacticians, he will not be short of offers. Carragher, who played under Benitez during his football career with Liverpool, revealed that he does not expect to see his former boss remain manager of the Magpies for the long-term.
He said, “If I’m being totally honest, I don’t expect to see Rafa Benitez at Newcastle over a sustained, long period of time. I think eventually something will happen with him and the owner and unfortunately for Newcastle this is not going to be a happy and long marriage. So enjoy it while he’s here.”
