Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has blasted Liverpool’s defense and suggested that Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno are not good enough.
The Reds defensive woes have been clearly exposed this season which has cost them points in the Premier League, Champions League and even led to their elimination from the Carabao Cup against Leicester this week.
Though the Reds did manage to defeat the Foxes 3-2 in the Premier League on Saturday, their haphazard defending was once again shown and the game could have ended as a draw had Simon Mignolet not saved Jamie Vardy’s penalty.
Ferdinand has now blasted Liverpool’s duo and said, “I think Virgil van Dijk would have improved this team no end. He would have been that dominant centre-half and I think that alongside Matip that would have been a good partnership.
“I think (Dejan) Lovren’s not good enough, he’s shown over a period of time that he makes too many mistakes.
“Going forward he is a delight to watch but defensively where you want him to be good first and foremost as a defender, he doesn’t do the job, he doesn’t quite cut it. So if you’ve got two out of your back four not cutting it, you’re going to come unstuck.”
The Reds were aiming to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer; however in the end the only defensive reinforcement which they made was signing Andrew Robertson from Hull City in an £8 million deal.
