Leeds £3.5million star reveals the do’s and don’t’s for his teammates to earn promotion

Having seen Leeds United promotion ambitions crumble towards the end of the last Championship campaign, Sweden international defender and Whites’ £3.5million signing Pontus Jansson wants his teammates to approach the 2017-18 season differently.

The Elland Road club have made an impressive start to the league campaign, winning 3 and drawing 2 so far.

Leeds currently occupy the 3rd spot on the log, a point away from an automatic promotion spot, and the 26-year-old centre-back doesn’t want the club to aim for anything less than a runners up spot.

The former Malmo and Torin defender told the YEP: “I think last year the biggest mistake was when we started talking about the play-offs and promotion and how many points we needed to be in the play-offs.

“It is a dangerous mistake to do that and I think this year we have to be clever. We have to work game by game, and three points in the next game is the only focus we should have.

“I think that was the biggest mistake when I look back at last season.  remember after the Brighton game we had too much focus on how many points we are going to need to be in the play-offs.

“Everybody said 75 points is going to be enough and it wasn’t so I think this year we have to be a bit more clever to take it game by game.”

Leeds last played in the topflight at the end of the 2003-04 season, and would hope they go all the way this time around with their 16th manager in charge.

It was a very busy summer market for the Whites, as a squad overhaul by new boss Thomas Christiansten saw 16 players arrive.

Leeds resume from the international break with a visit from Burton Albion on Saturday.

The visitors are just goal-difference away from the relegation zone having lost 3, drawn and won 1 apiece.

With 3 points at stake, the hosts would be keen on continuing their impressive form and picking up a win as they keep firm eyes on a long-awaited return to the Premier League.
