Newcastle reportedly in 3-way battle for young but experienced goalkeeper

According to Voetbal International (via Football-London), Newcastle are considering a move for PSV Eindhoven goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet, but so also are Crystal Palace and West Ham.

However, the Premier League trio appears to have been priced out of a move, with the Eredivisie giants reportedly doubling their earlier £5.6million asking price for the 26-year-old.

But Fox Sports claims Newcastle are willing to swap goalkeeper Tim Krul, who spent last season on loan with Ajax and Az, with Zoet.

Scouts from Saint James’ Park reportedly watched Zoet keep a clean sheet on Monday night as PSV beat Roda JC 2-0.

It’s believed the Netherlands international has plans to press ahead with a move before the transfer window closes on Thursday.

Karl Darlow is still being linked with a possible late exit this summer, and considering that Toons’ first-choice goalie Robert Elliot could do with a quality cover and competition as Newcastle attempt to retain their topflight status at the end of the campaign, that a move for a backup in the shape of  Zoet is being mulled over is understandable.

With the club short of funds, a swap deal is their best chance of landing their man, and the 9-time capped Dutch international has enough in his tank to challenge Elliot to the starting berth.

Zoet has 4 seasons worth of experience, and his excellent reflexes, saves per game ratio, which have seen him average 3.67 in the Eredivisie so far this season, and claim success rate are all the reasons he would make a fine addition to the Newcastle squad if he’s snapped up.
