As per the Daily Mail, West Brom have had a £21million bid for Ben Gibson rejected by Middlesbrough following two earlier unsuccessful attempts.
The Championship side only want to sell the 24-year-old centre-back to a top six side, and are very much aware of a long-standing interest from Tottenham.
Gibson wants to remain in the topflight after the club’s relegation last term, and they are hoping Spurs throw him that lifeline.
The young defender featured in all 38 league games last term, receiving his first call-up to the England national team in March as a result of his standout performances.
While Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have long formed an unbreakable partnership in Spurs’ defence, there isn’t enough quality cover for them. Gibson, however, has enough in his tank to act as a reliable backup to the duo.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, though, isn’t particularly keen on buying a central defender this summer, but could as well change him mind if the club sanctions a sale for £20million-rated Kevin Wimmer.
West Brom and Southampton have been linked with the Austrian international, and if he’s sold, a move could be activated for Gibson as Middlesbrough continue to play the waiting game.
