According to The Birmingham Mail, Steve Bruce was handed a boost in his efforts to sign Glenn Whelan after Derby County pulled out of the race to sign the experienced midfielder.
The 33-year-old Irish international has been the subject of a battle between several clubs, but it seems that the claret and blues are favorites for his signature. Before the end of the summer, Whelan could be the central figure of Steve Bruce’s midfield at Villa Park.
Reportedly, Derby County will now look elsewhere for reinforcements, even though their boss Gary Rowett is a big fan of Whelan’s qualities.
Aston Villa already placed an opening offer of £500,000 for the player, but this bid was immediately rejected and the Potters will not sell if this amount is not doubled.
The Irish international signed an extension to his contract last summer, and he has recorded more than 300 appearances for Stoke.
