In week 30 of the French Ligue 1, Dijon will host Saint-Etienne at the Stade Gaston Gerard this Sunday, March 19, 2017 (9:00 AM Pacific). The match is set to be a clash between two teams on opposite sides of the table with Dijon fighting relegation and Saint-Etienne in the mix for a Europa League spot.
Dijon has overachieved, still fighting to stay in the top flight of French football in 17th place with 28 points. Dijon is three points ahead of bottom feeders, Bastia and Lorient, so it is a tight race for relegation in France. ‘The Mustards’ are currently struggling, not having won a game in the Ligue 1 in four consecutive games. Their last victory coming in week 25 against another team fighting relegation in Caen. While the defense has been shaky for Dijon, one thing that ‘The Mustards’ do have that Saint-Etienne does not is a reliable source of goals. Lois Diony has been a huge figure in attack for the team producing eight goals and six assists this season. Cape Verdean striker, Julio Tavares has also counted with a huge supply of offense for the team generating nine goals and two assists. The pair will be one to watch for this match and should give Dijon a fighting chance.
Saint-Etienne has one of the best defenses in the Ligue 1, having only allowed 24 goals this season which is tied for second best in the league only behind PSG. While the defense has been a key to success, the offense has struggled only producing 33 goals. The top goalscorer for the team has been midfielder, Romain Hamouma who has scored six goals and is now playing as more of a center forward/striker.
Four players have been able to scramble for four goals each, including Loic Perrin who had a 95th-minute goal last week against Metz to salvage a point from that game. Before that 2-2 draw to Metz, ‘les verts’ had scored a goal or less in six out of their last seven games in all competitions. Saint-Etienne is currently in seventh place with 41 points and is still in the fight for a spot in Europe next season. A win here would be an important result, but it will not be easy against an opponent that also has the motivation to win this game.
