Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has revealed why he was embarrassed after Henri Lansbury scored during the Magpies 2-0 win over Aston Villa which helped them retain top spot on the Championship standings.
It was not because he felt that he had celebrated the goal as if he had scored himself. Once the ball crossed the line, Lascelles started celebrating wildly with team-mate Jonjo Shelvy.
He was under the impression that he had scored his third goal of the season and his second in two matches after his equalizer during the draw against Norwich last week.
He only found out that he was not the goal scorer when the stadium announcer gave the name of Lansbury, whom Lascelles knows well as the two played together at Nottingham Forest.
“It’s quite embarrassing, actually!,” Lascelles told nufc.co.uk, “I was celebrating, going nuts, thinking I’ve just scored a second, and two minutes later they said that it was an own-goal from Lansbury. But, I was obviously in the right place at the right time to flick it, which was all I could do.”
