Southampton are through to only their second EFL (League) Cup final in history after comprehensively beating Liverpool in a two-legged affair. Along the way, they have yet to concede a goal in this competition, and they will be tough nut to crack at Wembley as well.
Southampton, all the more impressively, did this feat without their star defensive duo Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk. Virgil was out injured while Fonte was sold last week to West Ham. Without those two, it was Oriol Romeu who continued to show his importance.
Saints were never truly troubled in this tie. The most trouble that they had come from a spilled shot by Fraser Forster that he miraculously saved. This was a team effort, and a result that was well-earned by a strong side.
Claude Puel should be very happy to have organized his team the way he has. Look for their season to only get better as this will give them a massive boost going forward.
