Tottenham are reportedly in a battle with rivals Chelsea and Manchester United to sign Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij, according to Italy’s La Republica.
The 24-year-old de Vrij began his professional career with Feyenoord and began to generate interest during his spell with Rotterdam. However, he established himself as a world class talent during the 2014 World Cup where he played a key role in The Netherlands surprise run to a third place finish.
His World Cup exploits ended up earning him a move to Lazio that summer. After making 35 appearances during his first season in Italy, he missed the majority of last season through injury.
De Vrij has made 13 Serie A appearances thus far and also become the subject of transfer speculation as he is in the final 18 months of his contract. He is thus likely to leave Lazio in the summer. The summer will be Lazio’s last chance to enforce a sale and in the end it will come down to whoever offers the best contract and transfer fee.
