The first week of the Liga MX Clausura 2017 will have a battled rivalry when Chivas of Guadalajara host Pumas UNAM at the Estadio Chivas this Saturday, January 7, 2017 (7:06 PM Pacific). Both sides are strong favorites to reach this season’s liguilla playoffs and therefore this game will serve as a parameter to see in which form they are at the start of the competition.

Chivas had a moderate off-season in which they signed Pachuca’s Rodolfo Pizarro to fortify their already strong midfield. This addition automatically converted the ‘rebaño’s’ midfield into one of the most competitive in the division even after the departure of Carlos Peña who left in bad terms with the team. Nonetheless, Chivas will have a very strong lineup in their game against Pumas which includes Rodolfo Cota in the net, Jair Pereira in defense, Pizarro and Orbelin Pineda in the midfield, with Alan Pulido to lead the attack.

Pumas of UNAM had several players leave the club via transfers like Fidel Martinez, Saul Berjon, and Luis Fuentes. To fill those gaps, they signed Erik Vera from Necaxa, Bryan Rabello from Santos Laguna, and most significantly Nicolas Castillo from Universidad Catolica of Chile. The team coached by Francisco Palencia finished the Clausura 2016 in 6th place yet they hope to improve this season and go further into the playoffs.
