According to news coming from Sky Sports, Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has been ruled out for 5-months due to an injury.

The defender suffered a knee injury in Arsenal training at their North London training ground last week. As a result, he wasn’t included in the Gunners contingent which has traveled to America for a Pre-Season tour.

In addition to Mertesacker, Paulista is another notable absentee for the Gunners. The Brazilian defender was suffering from tonsillitis, due to which he was also ruled out from the squad.

Moreover, with Laurent Koscielny enjoying an extended holiday after taking part in Euros, Arsenal will be severely short on the defensive front during their trip across the Atlantic in the next few days.

However, while Mertesacker has been ruled out for long, the likes of Paulista and Koscielny will be back in action when the new season starts next month.

Thus, it looks highly unlikely that Arsene Wenger will go in the transfer market for a short-term replacement of the German defender.

And with Calum Chambers and new signing Rob Holding also available, the injury to Mertesacker might not be a huge blow for the Gunners.
