Ahead of his team’s meeting with Tottenham on Sunday, Manchester United Manager Louis Van Gaal has revealed that both Phil Jones and Ashley Young are in contention to feature in this game.
However, while the duo are available for this fixture, anything more than a short stint from the bench looks highly unlikely. Phil Jones might not be involved, as the defender’s form before his injury wasn’t too good.
The Red Devils will travel Sunday in a fixture that has the capability to shape their season. Currently sitting in the 5th spot, 1 point behind Manchester City who sits in 4th, a victory in this fixture would give Manchester United a much-needed impetus ahead of the most crucial period of this season.
While Jones won’t return to the first team straight away, it would be interesting to see how Van Gaal accommodates Young in his starting XI in the coming weeks. The winger was in fine form before his injury at the left wing for the Red Devils.
Anthony Martial is currently playing the left winger role that was previously filled by Young. And with Rooney coming back next week, it looks increasingly unlikely that Young would get the spot in the starting XI.
However, while there was some encouraging news for the Manchester United faithful, they have been taken aback by some fresh injury concerns. Midfielder Adnan Januzaj, who hasn’t featured since that 3-2 win over Arsenal, is currently facing a spell on the sidelines.
Along with him, the German Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and English left-back Luke Shaw are both long-term absentees.
Thus, while Manchester United fans should be feeling confident after the double injury boost, they will still have to wait some more to see the full-blooded squad in action.
