Strongest Possible Manchester United Lineup vs Southampton: 4-2-3-1 with key returns and departures

van Gaal

Currently sitting third in the Premier League Table, Manchester United make their return back to England in a Sunday Premier League Clash with the Saints of Southampton.

United will be looking to bounce back from their Champions League loss to PSV Eindhoven, which they suffered earlier in the week.

However, on the domestic front, the Red Devils will be looking to make it two wins in a row after taking care of bitter rivals, Liverpool, last weekend.

Here is the Probable Strongest Possible Lineup for Manchester United against Southampton –

Goalkeeper

Fresh off signing a new contract and with a couple starts underneath his belt, United’s rock in net, David De Gea is back where he belongs.

Away matches in the unpredictable Premier League are always tough and with a recent devastating injury to the solid United defence, De Gea will be counted on to keep the Saint’s out of United’s net.

After performing admirably earlier in the campaign, Sergio Romero will continue to back up the World Class keeper on the bench.

Defense

The main positive talking point thus far has been the stellar display of the United defence, however, things have taken a turn for the worse with a gruesome injury to fullback, Luke Shaw.

Shaw’s injury will provide an opportunity for Marcos Rojo to take his place on the left side of the defence. On the other side, the ever solid, Matteo Darmian will continue to patrol the right side.

Louis van Gaal will look to the solid central defence pairing of fill-in captain, Chris Smalling and van Gaal’s fellow countryman, Daley Blind.

Midfield

After starting the Champions League match, Bastian Schweinsteiger should make his way back to the bench to make way for the pairing of Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin, who will both be looking to dictate play from the back.

Memphis Depay will hope his stellar play Champions League form will eventually translate to the Premier League. Juan Mata and Ander Herrera will be trusted to provide the creative spark that United have been missing for much of the season.

Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, two Premier League veterans, remain useful and reliable options off the bench. Young’s flexibility and recent stellar play has him knocking at the door for first-team action.

Attack

With an impressive debut to his United career at Old Trafford last weekend, teenage phenom, Anthony Martial came back to earth against PSV. Martial will make way for the returning Wayne Rooney, but the Frenchman will be a dangerous option off the bench.

Rooney has missed the last two matches with a hamstring problem, but the United captain is fit and will look to spearhead United’s tepid attack.
