Manchester United to sign WORLD CUP STAR in January

Despite Manchester United enjoying a bit of a mini revival in recent times, they have been far from convincing so far this season.

While United’s attacking prowess looks brilliant, the Red Devils have been very shaky defensively and one suspects that Louis van Gaal’s side will eventually be found out when they come up against top opposition in the coming weeks.

Van Gaal has certainly made a blunder by not signing a world class defender in the summer

Therefore, van Gaal’s decision not to sign a couple of world class defenders over the summer seems even more baffling and the fact that untried youngsters such as Paddy McNair and Tom Thorpe have been thrown into the deep end, serves to prove the fact that the United defence is very susceptible at the moment.

Van Gaal has the opportunity to right his wrongs in the upcoming January transfer window though, and it has now emerged that the Dutchman is eyeing a swoop for Aston Villa star Ron Vlaar in an attempt to shore up his weak backline.

Ron Vlaar being eyed up by Van Gaal

Vlaar had been strongly linked with a move to United over the summer but the transfer did not come into fruition as the 29-year old decided to stay put at Villa Park.

However, with Vlaar’s contract set to expire at the end of the season – the defender is widely expected to attract interest from various clubs when the transfer window reopens in January.

Now according to reports in England, Manchester United are looking to take advantage of Vlaar’s contractual situation and are said to be hopeful of tempting the Villans to part with the defender for a fee as little as £4million.

Vlaar could be available for as little as £4million

Villa are indeed looking to convince Vlaar to stay put at the club by preparing to offer an extension but with United expressing their interest in signing the 29-year old, he may not be open to committing his future to the Midlands side.

The reported £4million on offer certainly falls way below how much Villa value him but Paul Lambert’s side may well be forced to accept the incoming offer in order to avoid losing him for free over the summer.

What Do you think? Would Vlaar be a good acquisition for United or should van Gaal turn his attention to a younger alternative?
