Manchester United have finally completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera, after triggering the buy out clause in his contract. He joins from Athletic Bilbao on a four-year contract with an option of one more year.
After David Moyes tried to sign him last summer, this drawn out transfer saga has finally come to an end at the relief of United fans everywhere. Herrera is a mobile, energetic central midfielder who last season created more league chances than Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher and Marouanne Fellaini combined. It is clear to see that Herrera adds much needed numbers to United midfield as well as undoubted quality.
Ryan Giggs, the Red Devil’s assistant manager, said “Ander is a fantastic young player, with great energy and creativity. We believe him to be one of the brightest young prospects in Spain and I am certain he will be a big hit with the United fans”.
This is the first central midfielder United have signed in six years and he will be in contention to be a regular starter for Louis Van Gaal’s team when he takes over after the Nederlands camp are finished with the World Cup in Brazil.
Upon signing, Herrera said: “Signing for Manchester United is a dream come true. I have played at Old Trafford for Athletic Club in the UEFA Europa League and it was one of the highlights of my career so far. I have joined United to do all i can to help the team reach the clubs objectives”.
