Tottenham reportedly eyeing swoop for talented defender from Ligue 2

Footmercato has claimed that Tottenham have scouted Valenciennes defender Sikou Niakate this weekend.

The 18-year-old began his career with Paris Saint-Germain before joining Valenciennes where he has established himself within the first team. Valenciennes are currently languishing in 12th place on the Ligue 2 standings.

The youngster signed a new contract with Valenciennes in November last year amid interest from Swiss side Basel and Belgian club Zulte-Waregem.

His current deal will run until 2021 but Valenciennes could find it difficult to turn down a good offer from Spurs.

Niakate has made 13 first team appearances this season although he was playing for the B team during the weekend where a Tottenham scout was reported to be keeping tabs on him.

At this stage of his career, Niakate is showing tremendous potential. He will not step into the Spurs first team straightaway should he join but is someone who the club should keep their eyes on.
