Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has said that his comments about causing Tottenham to self-destruct during their game against Chelsea in May 2016 have been “misinterpreted”.

Spurs needed to win the game to keep alive their title hopes but eventually drew the game 2-2 which resulted in Leicester City winning the League.

Spurs eventually finished the season in third place behind the Foxes and their North London rivals Arsenal.

Clattenburg has since claimed that he could have sent off three players during Spurs game against Chelsea but added that he “went in with a gameplan” so that he could not be blamed for the result.

Clattenburg booked nine Tottenham players during the match- the most for one team in the Premier League in the game in which Chelsea came back from two goals down.

However, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live’s Sportsweek programme on Sunday, the 42-year-old Clattenburg said: “I probably said it in the wrong way. One thing I certainly don’t want to do is be the centre of attention.”
