Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles has revealed the reasons for coming to blows with teammate Mo Diame during one of the training sessions.
Lascelles grabbed the headlines earlier this month after the Newcastle captain exchanged punches with teammate Diame in a training session after the defender accused the midfielder of being “lazy”.
Since the incident, reporters have questioned the Englishman about his reasons for the quarrels which the player has finally answered in an interview with the BBC.
Lascelles told in an interview with Alan Shearer that the 23-year-old did what he did due to his responsibility as the captain of the team.
When reflecting upon the incident, Lascelles told the Newcastle legend, “Yeah of course, if we fall out we fall out.
“If it gets to blows, it gets to blows but I’ve got to do my job – that’s why I have the armband. I guess I can be a bit hands on but I’m still learning. I’m only 23 I’ve got a long way to go in that sense.”
When asked about how Benitez’s reacted to the incident, Lascelles responded saying the manager didn’t have much to say as the Spaniard has seen lot worse in his time.
It was fitting that Lascelles spoke about this bust-up with Alan Shearer, as the forward famously kicked teammate Keith Gillespie during a night out in 1997 in a similar incident.
