Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that his team have proven that they can compete in the Champions League after claiming a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Spurs took the lead through an own goal from Raphael Varane before Cristiano Ronaldo managed to find an equalizer for Madrid. The result means that Tottenham are on top of Group H as they have a superior goal difference to Madrid.

Though Spurs have been challenging for the Premier League during recent years, they have struggled to do well in the Champions League and this has earned them a lot of criticism. Pochettino said that he feels that his team can now compete in the Champions League.

“I am very pleased because we competed,” said the Argentine manager. “That was our challenge before the game; to try and believe we can compete at that level, against the most important team in the world, and I am very happy with the performance.

“The point was fantastic. It was an important draw and it puts us in a very good situation in the table. Our objective is to go to the next round but we showed ourselves that we can compete against Real Madrid. That’s very good news.”
