Tottenham have officially completed a £42million club-record move for Ajax centre-back Davinson Sanchez, and that could be bad news for the club’s Austria international defender Kevin Wimmer.
Sanchez’s arrival would almost signify Wimmer’s exit, and while he’s been indeed linked with a host of EPL sides, West Brom have denied being amongst suitors pursuing his services.
Ahead of weekend’s game against Burnley, Baggies manager Tony Pulis responded to questions linking his side with being close on a £15million deal for Wimmer thus: “No not at all and whoever’s telling you we’re close is miles away from that fact.
“We have a lot of irons in the fire with a lot of people and we’re hoping to get deals done.
“But they have to be the right deal for this football club and that goes for whether they’re buying or selling.”
Wimmer, 24, has struggled to force himself into manager Mauricio Pochettino’s key plans since arriving from Köln 2 summers ago.
He’s very much willing to leave in order to play regular football, but he has preference for the topflight despite being courted by teams in Italy and Germany.
West Ham, Southampton and Crystal Palace have also been linked with Wimmer, but nothing concrete has emerged from any of them.
With West Brom now out of the race, Wimmer’s chances of remaining in the Premier League appears to have been dealt a huge blow.
However, if his asking price were to be reduced, new suitors will definitely emerge, but it remains to be seen if Spurs will be willing to let the Austrian international go for a ridiculously cheap fee.
