Liverpool handed huge boost in hopes of signing top target following latest development

According to reports, Southampton star Virgil van Dijk has officially handed in a transfer request to his club.

The Dutch international has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool this summer though Chelsea are also reportedly interested in signing him.

Transfer talks between Southampton and the Reds were complicated by the fact that Jurgen Klopp’s side were forced to apologize to the Saints after being found guilty of tapping up the player.

Van Dijk is currently at the stage of his career, he will feel that he should be playing Champions League football and playing for a club that can challenge for trophies, so his decision to hand in a transfer request comes as no surprise.

He will however not be sold cheaply and Southampton will likely demand a fee in the region of £50 million for a sale to happen.  The Dutchman was arguably one of the best defenders in the Premier League last season.
