Southampton reportedly have already identified a replacement for van Dijk

According to reports, Southampton will approach Tottenham for Kevin Wimmer should Virgil van Dijk end up joining Liverpool this summer.

The Dutch international van Dijk has five years remaining on his current contract with the Saints but he has been strongly linked with a move to the Reds and he himself is also said to be keen on the move himself.

The defender was also not included in the team’s pre-season fixtures.  Though manager Mauricio Pellegrino wishes to have his prized asset in the squad ahead of next season, the club may be forced to sell if Jurgen Klopp’s side table a high offer.

As a result, Southampton are said to be eyeing Wimmer from Tottenham should a sale happen.

Wimmer has struggled to earn regular game time at Spurs since arriving in 2015 from German club FC Koln and has admitted that he is at a stage of his career where he is open to a move as he needs to play regularly, which could make Southampton an attractive destination for him.
