Southampton reportedly identify African star as potential replacement for van Dijk

Aymen Abdennour has been on the radar of Southampton for quite some time now and according to the Sun, the 27-year-old centre-back is wanted by the Saints this summer.

If this deal goes through for Southampton, it will be a clear sign that the Saints might be considering to sell Liverpool target Virgil Van Dijk.

However, they will face strong competition in the race to sign the Tunisian International because former Premier League champions Leicester City are also interested.

Abdennour played only 13 matches during the previous season for Valencia, and he is ready to move to another environment to receive more minutes on the pitch. Since 2015, he has appeared only 35 times in the league matches for Valencia.

In 2016, Chelsea had approached to the La Liga side, inquiring about the strong centre-back but the transfer evidently did not go through.

The Tunisian’s first notable performances were in France while he was playing for Toulouse, where he started 77 times. In 2014 he moved to Monaco, where he appeared 18 times, and at the end of the year, he joined Valencia. Abdennour is also a regular of them Tunisian national team, winning 54 caps.
