In a conversation with Talksport, a UK-based sports radio station, Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger assured captain Virgil van Dijk is not leaving the club this summer.
“Virgil is committed to us for a long time and we don’t see anything but that in our future” said the Chairman.
Having arrived at St. Mary’s in 2015, the Dutch center back has become one of the most prominent defenders in the Premier League. This has made top clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool take notice and start knocking his door.
This wouldn’t be the first time Liverpool signs a Southampton player. Sadio Mané, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, and Dejan Lovren are all current Liverpool players with a Saints past.
However, this time around the club isn’t interested in letting go of big names. Despite losing the League Cup against Manchester United, the team is full of young players with a bright potential.
In recent summers, the team has been forced to rebuild because of the sale of top players. Even though the money can be helpful, Krueger now wants to stabilize the project and keep the core of the team if possible.
Having just been named team captain after Jose Fonte’s departure, Virgil van Dijk is certainly part of the core the chairman hopes to keep come September.
