Bertrand wants Southampton to sign 29-year-old defender

With rumors swirling that Uruguayan defender Martin Caceres, a free agent, is about to sign with Southampton, left back Ryan Bertrand took time to speak on the matter to the media.

Speaking with Sky Sports, Bertrand said “it would only strengthen the team,” before adding that he has got a great pedigree and will be a fantastic signing for the club.”

Caceres has been a member of a very strong Uruguay defensive set up over the last few years. He’s also been on sides like Juventus and Sevilla in the past. At 29, he’s getting up there and would be on (reportedly) high wages.

However, Saints see it well worth the gamble given their current predicament of missing their inspirational center back Virgil van Dijk. Van Dijk is likely to be out until April at the earliest, and the Saints desperately need some cover and experience.

This is the type of signing that we all need to get used to seeing from the Saints. They are going to see their young players go on occasion, but they are going to also be getting veterans from bigger clubs as well as some younger players, too.

This is something that is 100% necessary at the moment for Southampton, and it’s just going to have be accepted as they really do need the help currently.
