With all the focus being on Virgil van Dijk of late at Southampton, they could be facing the departure of their other center back in the January transfer window.  According to reports from the Daily Mail, Fonte has turned in a request to leave the South Coast club instead of signing an extension with the Saints.

Fonte has become a part of the furniture at the club as he has played there since 2010, but it appears that he is now set on bigger and better things for his career.

It’s been a bit of a meteoric rise for him as he joined the side when it was in League One and worked his way up to the Premier League and eventually being a part of the Euro 2016 win with Portugal.

It is heavily rumored that his possible destination is a link-up with fellow Portuguese man Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.  However, this doesn’t seem as likely as it once did as United have turned a corner defensively.

No matter where he ultimately goes, it appears as if the 33 year old’s time is up at Southampton, and he’ll likely be moving on.  For Southampton, they can’t afford to lose both center backs, however, in the same window.
