Spurs were quick to shoot down the rumour that Schalke 04 were in talks with Spurs’ centre-back Kevin Wimmer to bring him back to the Bundesliga by saying that he will not be allowed to leave the club in January.
Schalke are looking for another centre-back after Benedikt Höwedes sustained a thigh injury, and is expected to miss up to three months. They’re apparently in talks also with American John Brooks — this move seems likely to happen.
Wimmer, who arrived from FC Köln, this past summer, has struggled to get regular first team minutes at White Hart Lane. The main reason is because the pairing of Jan Vertoghen and Toby Alderweireld has been so successful this season.
Before Saturday, Wimmer had yet to even be featured in a Premier League match. That all changed however when Jan Vertoghen came off injured after a dirty elbow to the head from Crystal Palace’s Connor Wickham.

Tottenham don’t know how long their star defender will be out for, but for now Wimmer is the only reasonable option. Federico Fazio has failed to impress and now is more of a liability when he’s on the pitch.
Wimmer has impressed in Europa and FA cup matches and is capable of filling in for Vertoghen, if he’s out for an extended period of time. And with the number of matches coming up for the Lilywhites, they’ll certainly call on the Austrian to be at his best.
