Southampton boss Ronald Koeman feels that the Chelsea players are suffering from mentality and attitude problems. Dutch manager Koeman has pointed out that the Chelsea defense has suffered from the extensive changes that have been carried out every single week.
Speaking to the media ahead of his team’s clash against the Blues, he said, “Maybe they have lost a bit of that winning mentality. [And] they are making more changes [in defence] than last year”.
He went on to say, “Everyone can have a tough start, maybe defensively they have lost a little bit [of quality], if you look at the goals they have conceded, it is a big difference to last year, so maybe they have lost a little bit”.
After a conceding a total of 14 goals, Chelsea now sport the joint worst defense in the entire Premier League. Koeman feels that the constantly changing starting lineup of the team has a big role to play in their faltering title defense. The Blues have been able to secure only two wins from their seven league games and the defending champions are struggling to stay out of the bottom quarter of the table.
A Jose Mourinho team has never faltered like this before and all eyes are on Stamford Bridge to see exactly how he manages to drag them out of this mess. Chelsea’s domestic woes went international this week as they suffered defeat at the hands of Porto. A win against Southampton will go a long way to undo this damage but it’s for sure that that won’t be so easy.
