New Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has revealed that defender David Luiz still has a future with the club. There was speculation surrounding the future of the 31-year-old this summer and he had been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Luiz did not enjoy a good relationship with former Blues manager Antonio Conte who was sacked during the summer. The former PSG and Benfica man only went on to make 17 appearances in all competitions last season and scored two goals.

However, it now looks like the experienced Luiz will get a new lease on life at the Bridge under the guidance of Sarri.

Luiz helped the Blues to start their 2018/19 Premier League season on a high as they recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town during the weekend.

The goals came from new signing Jorginho who converted a penalty, midfielder N’Golo Kante, and the experienced Pedro.

Many questions have been raised over whether the Blues will be able to fight for a top-four position this season, especially as doubts surround their forward department. Alvaro Morata struggled for form last season and while Olivier Giroud is a decent striker, he is not exactly a player who one can count on to be near the top of the scoring chart.

However, the victory over Town is something that the club can take heart from and aim to build upon. Sarri next prepares his troops for a game against Unai Emery’s Arsenal next weekend.

When reflecting on Luiz’s chances of first-team football this season, Sarri said as quoted by Goal: “I don’t know about what happened in the past but now he has a good chance,”

“I disagree that he can only play as one of three central defenders. If you are a good defender, you can play in a line of three or in a four.

“David has a big future here. He will be useful for us but not just on the pitch. He is also very important in the dressing room. I very much enjoy his attitude when I am working with him.”
