Late USMNT Call-Up Rewards Stoke City Midfielder’s Scoring Run

Jack McGlynn has been called into the United States squad for the Nations League quarterfinals against Haiti, replacing Gio Reyna four days after being left out of the original roster.

U.S. Soccer announced the change on Saturday, confirming Reyna has been withdrawn due to injury and that the roster stands at 25 players.

The federation’s release makes the reason for the call plain, citing the Stoke City midfielder’s club form: a team-high five goals and two assists in 11 appearances, with goals in each of his last three matches.

Four Days From Omission to Call-Up

When Mauricio Pochettino named his squad on Wednesday, McGlynn was not in it. His omission was noted at the time as one of the surprises of the selection.

His answer was already in progress. He scored at Preston North End on October 31, scored a free kick at Blackburn Rovers on November 3, and scored the equaliser at Portsmouth on Saturday, hours before the call came.

Three goals in a week, for the team that went top of the Championship on Saturday, turned an omission into an invitation.

Why the Place Opened

Reyna scored for Strasbourg at Toulouse on Friday, then left the match on 70 minutes with a thigh injury. U.S. Soccer has given no detail on the injury beyond the withdrawal, and no timeline.

He is the second withdrawal in two days. West Brom defender George Campbell went out on Friday and was replaced by Mark McKenzie, and now Reyna follows him.

What It Means for Stoke City

Stoke go into the international break top of the Championship, and their form player is now spending it in a competitive national team camp rather than at home.

He is not the club’s only American on duty. Luca Bombino, who created McGlynn’s Portsmouth equaliser, is with the United States Under-23s.

For a club whose recruitment brought McGlynn from Houston Dynamo in the summer, a full international call earned on club form is the model working as intended.

What It Does and Does Not Mean

The honest reading starts with a limit. McGlynn restores the midfield group to eight; the starting place Reyna vacates will be contested by the players already in camp, and a late call-up does not inherit it.

What it does give him is a genuine audition. These are competitive quarterfinals, the first official competition of the new cycle, not friendlies, and he arrives as the form midfielder available to Pochettino.

It is his first United States squad since the 2025 Gold Cup, where he played in all six matches of the run to the final. He has 13 caps and two goals, and at 23 his international story is resumed, not started.

What Happens Next

The squad gathers on Monday. The United States play Haiti in Miami on November 14 and in Cincinnati on November 17, with a place in the Nations League semifinals at stake.

McGlynn then returns to a Stoke side that resumes at home to Birmingham City on November 21, top of the table and chasing a promotion his goals are helping to build.
