FIFA confirmed on Thursday that Qatar will host the final three matches of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2026, locking in the December dates that define Toluca’s path to a possible final against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Bureau of the FIFA Council announced the decisions following the latest FIFA Council meeting in Zurich. It is the third straight year that Qatar stages the tournament’s final phase.
The three matches will decide three trophies in eight days: the Derby of the Americas, the Challenger Cup and the Intercontinental Cup itself.
The Intercontinental Cup brings together the champions of the six confederations in a single-elimination bracket. Every champion except Europe’s must win through the play-off rounds to reach the final.
Toluca Open Against the Libertadores Champion
Toluca, the CONCACAF Champions Cup winners, enter in the FIFA Derby of the Americas on Wednesday, December 9, 2026. Their opponents will be the Copa Libertadores champions.
The match will be played at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium. Toluca will learn their opponents on November 28, 2026, when the Copa Libertadores final decides the South American champion.
Mamelodi Sundowns Wait in the Challenger Cup
The Derby winners move on to the FIFA Challenger Cup on Saturday, December 12, 2026, also at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium. Waiting there are South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sundowns already won the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, beating Al Ahli 2-1 in Pretoria on September 19, 2026. Al Ahli had eliminated Auckland FC in the play-off round in August.
Paris Saint-Germain Wait in the Final
The Challenger Cup winners advance to the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final on Wednesday, December 16, 2026. The final will be played at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.
Paris Saint-Germain enter directly at the final as the European champions, a bye built into the tournament format. The French club also arrives as the defending champion after winning the 2025 edition in Qatar.
For Toluca, the route means two wins in four days for a shot at the title. A Mexican club has stood in this final before: Pachuca reached it in 2024, losing to Real Madrid.
