Armando González’s Last Week

Olympiacos played no competitive matches between October 4 and October 10. The October FIFA break paused the club calendar, and Gonzalez spent the window with the Mexico national team, returning to training late without scoring, according to albat.com.

His most recent club appearance came September 20 at Levadiakos, and it marked a turning point. After three consecutive starts, Gonzalez lost his place in the lineup to Roman Yaremchuk and watched from the bench as Olympiacos labored against the league’s 13th-place side. He entered in the 76th minute for Jota Silva with the score still 0-0 and had just over 15 minutes to find a winner that never came for him. Manolis Saliakas headed home the only goal in the second minute of second-half stoppage time for a 1-0 win.

Before the break, the highs had been real. On September 16, Gonzalez started his Europa League debut against Jagiellonia Bialystok and scored the 43rd-minute equalizer, pouncing on a loose ball in the area to start a 2-1 comeback win before coming off in the 62nd minute. Eight days earlier he scored twice and added an assist in a 3-2 Greek Cup win over Volos. Across his first seven official matches in Greece he has four goals and two assists, but the league goal still eludes him.

Olympiacos vs Panathinaikos Preview

Sunday is a title-race collision. Panathinaikos arrives perfect: five wins from five, 15 points, 12 goals scored and two conceded. Olympiacos sits fifth at 3-1-1 with 10 points, and a home defeat would leave the champions eight points adrift before mid-October. A win drags them right back into the fight.

Gonzalez’s role is genuinely uncertain, and it would be wrong to guess. He returned late from Mexico duty, new signing Marius Mouandilmadji has been training at Renti in his absence and could start the derby, and Yaremchuk has worked his way back into Imanol Alguacil’s plans. Alguacil has publicly noted the physical adjustment the striker still faces against Greece’s towering center backs. With a trip to Marseille in the Europa League four days later, rotation across both matches looks likely.

For a striker who has scored in the cup and in Europe but not in the league, there would be no better stage for a first Super League goal than the derby.
