Five months after Cruz Azul won a league title on their pitch, Pumas UNAM get their rematch. La Máquina visit the Estadio Olímpico Universitario on Sunday for the Clásico de la Obsesión, a Jornada 11 meeting that finds the defending champions chasing the top of the table while Pumas UNAM fight to stay in the playoff picture. Here are the five storylines that will decide it.
A Title Rematch at the Scene of the Crime
The last time these two met, a championship was on the line. After a scoreless first leg, Cruz Azul won 2-1 at the Olímpico Universitario on May 24 in the second leg of the Clausura 2026 final, with Rodolfo Rotondi scoring the title-winning goal in the 94th minute after Pumas UNAM had led 1-0 at halftime. It was Cruz Azul’s tenth league title. Pumas UNAM, the regular-season superlíder, finished the night with nine men and as runners-up.
Sunday is the first meeting since that final, and the needle is already there. Mediotiempo reported this week that Cruz Azul’s camp has taunted Pumas UNAM by calling the Olímpico Universitario their house, a nod to the trophy lifted there in May. For Pumas UNAM, this is about answering the night that still stings.
Four Points Separate Them in the Table
Cruz Azul sit seventh with 16 points from ten matches (five wins, one draw, four defeats), in the Play-In positions. Pumas UNAM are twelfth with 12 points (three wins, three draws, four defeats), two points below eighth place, with the club’s stated target a top-eight finish.
The math is simple. A Cruz Azul win keeps La Máquina within reach of the summit. A Pumas UNAM win drags them back into the playoff pack and denies the champions breathing room. With the Apertura entering its decisive stretch, neither side can treat this as just a rivalry game.
Solari’s Pumas UNAM Need a Win, Not More Patience
The numbers are ugly. Pumas UNAM have one win in their last nine league matches and lost 2-3 at home to Atletico San Luis in Jornada 10, a game with three penalties in which Juninho’s stoppage-time equalizer was ruled out for offside. They have not repeated a starting lineup in any of the ten rounds, and they are conceding 1.6 goals per game.
Esteban Solari has publicly taken responsibility, saying after the San Luis defeat that the team must give much more. The board, for now, is behind him: FutbolTotal reported on October 6, citing ESPN and a source inside the club, that there is no Plan B, no ultimatum, and Solari has the directors’ full confidence. Sebastián Córdova is out for the rest of the Apertura with a knee injury, but César Huerta is back from his back problem and building toward full fitness after his cameo against Atlas. Sunday needs to be the day the patience pays off.
Cruz Azul’s Attack Travels, but Paradela Is a Doubt
La Máquina can score with anyone. They put four past Club America in a 4-3 Jornada 8 classic and rescued a 3-3 draw with Toluca in Jornada 10, with Gabriel Fernández scoring twice including a 94th-minute equalizer, all while playing without Erik Lira, Jeremy Márquez and Kevin Mier on international duty. The 1-0 defeat at Monterrey in Jornada 9 is the only blemish on the recent record.
The concern is José Paradela, the attack’s creative hub. He is a doubt for Sunday after suffering a knock during the international break; he left the club’s October 4 friendly early, though Cruz Azul has published no medical report. If he cannot go, Joel Huiqui must reshuffle an attack that has carried the team.
The Internationals Are Back
Both squads are whole again after the FIFA window. Cruz Azul welcome back Lira and Márquez from Mexico duty and Mier from Colombia, all reported back fit. Pumas UNAM had no players in Rafael Márquez’s first Mexico squad, the only one of the Cuatro Grandes absent, but their foreign contingent returns: Álvaro Angulo from Colombia, Pedro Vite from Ecuador, Robert Morales from Paraguay, Keylor Navas from Costa Rica, and Adalberto Carrasquilla from Panama.
Carrasquilla’s return matters most. The midfielder served a one-match suspension in Jornada 10 after his red card against Atlas and is eligible again, restoring steel to a midfield that has missed him. With both teams near full strength, there are no excuses left on either bench.
Sunday at the Olímpico Universitario: a final rematch, four points apart in the table, and a rivalry that keeps producing classics. The Clásico de la Obsesión rarely needs more than that.
