The Clásico Tapatío is back. Atlas hosts Chivas de Guadalajara at the Estadio Jalisco on Saturday night with the two rivals separated by a single point in the Apertura 2026 table, and Chivas arriving with the momentum of a Clásico Nacional win over Club America. Here are the five storylines that will decide the Guadalajara derby.
Back-to-Back Clásicos on the Line for Chivas de Guadalajara
Chivas already won one clásico this month. During the FIFA break, the Rebaño beat Club America 2-0 in a Clásico Nacional friendly on October 4 in Oakland, with Ángel Sepúlveda scoring both goals in the first half, the first from the penalty spot after an Alejandro Zendejas handball and the second a first-half header.
The derby record favors Chivas too. They have won the last two league editions of the Clásico Tapatío: a 4-1 rout at the Akron in October 2025 and a 2-1 comeback at the Jalisco in March 2026, with Sepúlveda scoring the late winner that night. But league form tells a less flattering story. Chivas lost 0-2 at home to Queretaro in Jornada 10, their second defeat of the tournament, and they dropped to third. Saturday is a chance to prove the America win was a turning point rather than a friendly footnote.
One Point Separates the Rivals in the Table
This is a top-of-the-table derby in everything but name. Chivas sits third with 18 points (5 wins, 3 draws, 2 losses), one point ahead of sixth-place Atlas on 17. Both trail co-leaders Toluca and America, who have 20 points each.
The stakes are simple. A Chivas win would take them to 21 points and the provisional top of the table. An Atlas win would put them level with the leaders on 20. With the Apertura entering its decisive stretch, neither side can afford to treat this as just a rivalry game.
Luis Romo’s Injury Looms Over Chivas de Guadalajara
The biggest question mark of the week wears a Chivas shirt. Luis Romo suffered a left hamstring injury (biceps femoral) during Mexico’s 3-0 loss to the United States, was substituted at halftime with ice on his left thigh, and on October 5 the Mexican federation announced he was leaving El Tri camp to return to Chivas for recovery.
Chivas has not announced whether Romo will be available for Saturday. His absence would be significant: he has started all 10 league matches this season and is central to Gabriel Milito’s midfield. Omar Govea is also unavailable after his red card in the final minutes against Queretaro.
Atlas Ended Its Winless Run in Dramatic Fashion
Atlas arrives with new life. On September 25, Hernán Crespo’s side came from 2-1 down to beat Tijuana 3-2 at the Estadio Caliente, with Luis Esteves converting a late penalty and Florián Monzón scoring the stoppage-time winner after Ryan Mmaee had opened the scoring. The comeback ended a four-match winless run that had brought public criticism of Crespo from pundits.
The cost of recent weeks has been high, though. Cape Verde forward Duk, a summer signing from Leganés, ruptured the patellar tendon in his left knee against Pumas in Jornada 9, underwent surgery on September 21, and will miss the rest of the Apertura, a loss the club itself confirmed. Monzón’s late winner in Tijuana was a timely reminder that Atlas has other finishers.
The Jalisco Has Belonged to Chivas de Guadalajara Lately
The venue has not been kind to the home side in this fixture recently. The last Clásico Tapatío, on March 7, 2026, ended Atlas 1-2 Chivas at the Jalisco: Paulo Ramírez put Atlas ahead after a Raúl Rangel error, but Armando González equalized and Sepúlveda won it in the 84th minute.
Across the last five league derbies, the record is perfectly balanced at two wins apiece and one draw. But the momentum is all Chivas: they won the last two, and Atlas’s most recent derby victory anywhere came in the Apertura 2024 Play-In, a 2-1 win at the Akron in November 2024. For Crespo’s team, Saturday is about reclaiming their own stadium in the fixture that matters most.
Saturday night at the Jalisco: one point apart, the top of the table within reach, and the city’s bragging rights on the line. The Clásico Tapatío rarely needs more than that.
