Why This Friendly Matters

Saturday’s meeting in Glendale is the 80th all-time clash between Mexico and the United States, with Mexico leading the series 38-24-17. It is also Rafa Márquez’s third match in charge of El Tri and his first against Mexico’s fiercest rival, and it comes with the new coach still searching for his first victory after 1-1 draws against Colombia and Peru.

For the Americans, it is the biggest test yet of Mauricio Pochettino’s new cycle. The USA opened this international window with a 4-1 rout of Peru and a 4-2 win over Chile, scoring eight goals across the two games behind a wave of teenage talent. It is the first USA-Mexico meeting since the 2025 Gold Cup final, which Mexico won 2-1.

Recent Form

Senior national team results, all competitions, most recent first.

Mexico is unbeaten but winless under Márquez. El Tri drew 1-1 with Peru on September 29 in Harrison, New Jersey, after a much-changed lineup could not find a winner. Three days earlier in Baltimore, 17-year-old Gilberto Mora’s equalizer rescued a 1-1 draw with Colombia. Both teams reached the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup on home soil, where Mexico fell to England.

The USA arrives in better rhythm. Pochettino’s side beat Chile 4-2 on September 29 in St. Louis, following the 4-1 win over Peru on September 26 in Orlando. The Americans also reached the World Cup Round of 16 before a 4-1 defeat to Belgium. Pochettino, now under contract through 2030, is blending experienced players with a dozen first-time senior call-ups.

Team News

Gilberto Mora is available for Saturday’s friendly. The 17-year-old midfielder, who wears El Tri’s number 10 shirt, trained normally with the group all week after feeling pain in his ankle during the substitutes’ warm-up following the Peru match and being sent for an MRI, according to TUDN. At Friday’s pre-match press conference, coach Rafa Márquez confirmed the youngster is eligible to play tonight, saying he is “evolving quite well, which is why he is eligible for the match” (translated from Spanish). Whether Mora starts is a technical decision, Márquez added.

Hirving “Chucky” Lozano is the new doubt in the Mexico camp. The winger did not finish Friday’s training because of a muscle problem and is practically ruled out of tonight’s friendly, per TUDN’s Mauricio Ymay reporting from camp. There has been no official federation announcement yet.

Márquez rotated heavily for the Peru draw, fielding a much younger side to evaluate fringe players, so the lineup against the USA should look closer to full strength. For the Americans, 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan has been the breakout story of the window, while established names Christian Pulisic, Tim Ream and Folarin Balogun are not in camp.

Head-To-Head

Mexico has had the better of this rivalry lately. El Tri won the last two meetings: 2-0 in a friendly in Guadalajara in October 2024 and 2-1 in the 2025 Gold Cup final. Before that October 2024 defeat, the USA had gone seven games unbeaten against Mexico (five wins, two draws).

What to Watch

The central question is whether Márquez finally gets his first win, and how he uses a now-available Mora to get it. Mexico has scored in both games under the new coach but has looked short of cutting edge, while the USA’s young attack has been ruthless. How El Tri handles the Americans’ pace in transition will say a lot about where Márquez’s project stands.

Prediction

Prediction: USA 2-1 Mexico. The Americans have eight goals in two games this window and look sharp, while El Tri are still finding their attacking shape under Márquez, even with their brightest young talent available.
