Why This Match Matters
This is the opening Group B fixture for both sides in the 2026-27 Concacaf Nations League. Jamaica and Guatemala opened the group earlier on Friday in Kingston. Group B also includes Martinique and El Salvador. Each team plays four group matches, two at home and two away, and the top two advance to the quarterfinals alongside Mexico, the United States, Canada and Panama.
For Honduras, the night marks the official debut of coach Jose Francisco Molina, who faced the media for the first time as national team coach on September 24. Molina noted that Suriname also arrives with a new coach, which makes the visitors’ approach harder to predict. With only four matches to decide the group, neither side can afford a slow start in Tegucigalpa.
Team News
Honduras will be without Nixon Cruz, who was withdrawn from the squad on September 21 with a left knee injury and replaced by Olimpia midfielder Jorge Alvarez, according to the Honduran federation. Molina also confirmed on September 24 that Edwin Rodriguez will miss the Suriname match after arriving in camp with discomfort, though the coaching staff hopes he can return later in the window.
Suriname traveled to Honduras short-handed. A September 23 report listed Joel Piroe, Tjaronn Chery, who has retired from the national team, Montnor, Pherai, Misidjan, Van der Kust and Hahn among the absentees for the Nations League opener. Sheraldo Becker, Stefano Denswil, Ridgeciano Haps, Melayro Bogarde, Kenneth Paal and Jay-Roy Grot were among the available names in the traveling party.
Recent Form
All competitions, most recent first. Neither side has played in more than three months.
Honduras has one win in its last five: a 2-0 friendly defeat to Argentina on June 6, 2026; a 2-2 friendly draw with Peru on March 31 at a neutral venue in Leganés, Spain; a 0-0 World Cup qualifying draw in Costa Rica on November 18, 2025; a 2-0 qualifying defeat in Nicaragua on November 13; and a 3-0 qualifying win over Haiti on October 13. That is one win, two draws and two defeats, with no win in the last four. The most recent home match was the 3-0 win over Haiti.
Suriname also has one win in its last five: a 2-1 defeat to Bolivia in the inter-confederation playoff on March 26, 2026; a 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat in Guatemala on November 18, 2025; a 4-0 qualifying win over El Salvador on November 13; a 1-1 qualifying draw in Panama on October 14; and a 1-1 qualifying draw with Guatemala on October 10. That is one win, two draws and two defeats.
Prediction
Honduras 2-0. The hosts open a new coaching era in front of their own supporters against a Suriname side missing several key players and adjusting to a new coach.
