Jornada 9 of the Liga MX Apertura 2026 was the round where the margins started to show. Toluca, the league leaders, led Santos Laguna 2-0 before conceding just before halftime, then threw the match away and finished with 10 men. Club América and Chivas Guadalajara split a 2-2 Clásico Nacional that neither side could afford to lose. At the bottom of the table, FC Juárez won for the first time all season, while Tigres UANL extended a winless away run that is becoming a genuine crisis. In between those extremes, Cruz Azul lost at Monterrey and five clubs closed to within a single point of fourth place, all sitting on 14 points behind Cruz Azul’s 15.
Here are the five conclusions Jornada 9 supported with the strongest evidence.
1. Toluca Stayed Top, but Their Lead Is Now Built on a Warning Sign
Toluca led Santos Laguna 2-0 at the Estadio Nemesio Diez on Sunday, with Federico Viñas (25 minutes) and Paulinho (43 minutes) both scoring from Alexis Vega service. Santos had the final word of the first half, though: Ezequiel Bullaude pulled one back at 45+4 to make it 2-1 at the break. Then the match turned. Everardo López was sent off at 45+7 for serious foul play, and a 10-man Toluca conceded twice more, to Kevin Palacios in the 86th minute and Fran Villalba in the 95th, losing 3-2.
The result matters beyond one bad Sunday. Toluca remain first with 19 points from nine matches, but the separation at the top is minimal: Chivas sit second on 18 points from nine, and América are third on 17 from eight, with a game in hand. Worse, López is expected to miss Jornada 10 through suspension, when Toluca travel to face Cruz Azul on Saturday, September 26. The evidence from Jornada 9 is that Toluca’s control at the top is thinner than the table suggests, and their next fixture is the one that could expose it.
2. The Clásico Kept América and Chivas Near the Top of the Table
Chivas took a 2-0 lead into halftime at the Estadio Banorte on Saturday and were 45 minutes from a statement win. Club América answered through substitute Miguel Borja, who scored twice after coming off the bench in the second half, and the Clásico Nacional finished 2-2.
The broader conclusion is about positioning, not momentum. Chivas remain second on 18 points from nine matches, unbeaten in five league games (three wins, two draws), while América, under Guillermo Almada, are third on 17 from eight, with a game in hand. Toluca’s 3-2 defeat on Sunday left the top of the table open, but neither Clásico side managed more than a point, so the three clubs head into Jornada 10 separated by just two. The draw created no separation at the top, and the crowded group behind them means every dropped point at this stage costs Liguilla seeding. Chivas host Querétaro in Jornada 10 and América visit Necaxa, and both need to turn draws like this one into wins.
3. Juárez Are Alive, and Tigres Are Sinking
The biggest result of the round by table impact came on Friday in Juárez, where FC Juárez beat Tigres UANL 2-0 for their first win of the Apertura, ending an eight-match losing streak. Óscar Estupiñán scored both goals, a penalty in the 66th minute after César Araujo fouled José Luis Rodríguez, and a header in the 79th from a Rodríguez assist. The brace took Estupiñán to five Apertura goals and 33 first-division goals for Juárez, tying Darío Lezcano as the club’s all-time scorer.
The context around the result explains why it matters. Juárez had sacked coach Pedro Caixinha and sporting director Andrés Fassi, with Gustavo Lema taking charge, and club owner Alejandra de la Vega publicly apologized to supporters. This was not a lucky escape: Tigres had 57 percent possession and a disallowed goal but failed to turn their territorial advantage into a goal. The result exposes Tigres’ real problem, which is on the road: the club is now 10 Liga MX away matches without a win, sitting 16th on seven points. Juárez are still last on three points, but Jornada 9 gave them a result to build on. Tigres’ away form is no longer a blip; it is the defining issue of their season.
4. Cruz Azul Are Slipping Into the Pack
Monterrey beat Cruz Azul 1-0 at the Estadio BBVA on Saturday, with César Garza scoring in the 7th minute. The result itself was narrow, but its effect on the table was not. Cruz Azul stayed fourth on 15 points, but they have now taken just five points from their last five matches (one win, two draws, two losses), and the group behind them has closed to within a single point.
That group is crowded: Querétaro, Tijuana, León, Puebla and Atlas all sit on 14 points, immediately behind fourth-place Cruz Azul, and Monterrey moved to 13. Cruz Azul’s cushion has effectively disappeared. The trajectory evidence is what turns this from a recap into a takeaway: a top-four team trending sideways while five or six chasers trend steady is how a comfortable position becomes a fight. Jornada 10 brings Toluca to face Cruz Azul on Saturday, September 26, in a match that could either stabilize Cruz Azul or drag them fully into the pack.
5. Rondón Is Running Away With the Scoring Race, but Pachuca Aren’t Turning His Goals Into Enough Points
Salomón Rondón scored twice for Pachuca on Sunday, in the 55th and 89th minutes, to rescue a 2-2 draw against Tijuana after Pachuca had trailed 2-0 at halftime. The goals took Rondón to 10 for the Apertura, five clear of the nearest challengers: Ricardo Marín, Gilberto Mora, Lucas Ocampos, Julián Carranza and Óscar Estupiñán all sit on five. At the current pace, the scoring title is Rondón’s to lose if he stays healthy.
The other side of this takeaway is what Pachuca are doing with that production. Pachuca sit 11th on 12 points from nine matches, outside the top 10 despite having the league’s most productive striker by a clear distance. A scoring lead that large should normally translate into a correspondingly high league position, but Pachuca’s points total does not reflect Rondón’s output. The evidence points to a side whose elite individual production is not carrying over into results, and Jornada 10 sends Pachuca to Santos Laguna, a team that just proved it can score three times against the league leaders.
What to Watch in Jornada 10
Three matches carry the Jornada 9 storylines forward. Cruz Azul vs Toluca on Saturday, September 26 (6:00 PM ET) pits the slipping fourth-place side against the league leaders, who are expected to be without López, and it could reshape the top of the table. Chivas vs Querétaro, also Saturday (6:07 PM ET), tests whether Chivas can turn Clásico frustration into three points against a side sitting on 14 points. And León vs FC Juárez on Sunday, September 27 (8:00 PM ET) will show whether Friday’s win was the start of a genuine Juárez revival or a one-night reprieve.
