Key moments

Rodolfo Cota kept Club América alive early, denying González in the 20th minute and Roberto Alvarado five minutes later before Chivas finally broke through. The visitors’ opener was no more than they deserved after a dominant opening half hour.

González’s night ended early, as the scorer was forced off injured in the 57th minute and replaced by Efraín Álvarez, a blow for Chivas just as Club América began to push forward.

Borja’s introduction changed everything. His bicycle kick ranks among the great Clásico Nacional goals, and the equalizer three minutes later completed a frantic turnaround. Chivas nearly stole it back when Sandoval’s 76th-minute effort crashed off the post.

There was late drama as Club América appealed for a penalty in stoppage time after a surging run from Brian Rodríguez, but the 2-2 scoreline held and both sides settled for a point.

What it means

The draw keeps the top of the table congested. Chivas move to 18 points and sit second, while Club América reach 17 points in third. Toluca lead the way with 19 points and can stretch their advantage when they host Santos Laguna on Sunday night at 8:00 PM ET on TUDN.

With one point separating the two rivals after nine rounds, neither side lost ground in the title race, but Chivas will feel they let two points slip after leading 2-0.

What’s next

Club América travel to face Necaxa on Sunday, September 27, before a potential title-race showdown at leaders Toluca on October 31.
