Sporting Kansas City is down 2-1 in this quarterfinal matchup as the Wizards were unable to defeat Independiente in Panama. Spanish midfielder Ilie Sanchez scored the lone goal for KC from the penalty spot and now the MLS side will really need to use its home-field advantage.
Sanchez scored another goal this past weekend as Kansas City collected its first win of the MLS season by defeating the Philadelphia Union 2-0 at home. Independiente has been the biggest surprise in this edition of the CONCACAF Champions League, just minutes away from making the semifinal stage. Los Vikingos defeated Toronto FC by an aggregate score of 5-1 in the round of 16 and now have a 2-1 lead in this series.
Omar Browne and Romeesh Ivey have been two of the most impressive players so far with two goals each in the competition. Independiente does have a limited squad, but has been excelling at closing spaces and making the games very hard-fought and physical.
