This Sunday, February 24, 2019, it was officially announced that Monarcas Morelia had parted ways with manager Roberto Hernandez. La Monarquia had lost 3-0 against Queretaro on Saturday and that was the decisive game that cost Hernandez his job.

Monarcas Morelia was off to a terrible 2019 Clausura season, currently in 16th place with just four points. The team from Michoacan was the third-worst defense in the tournament with 14 goals allowed and was tied for the second-worst offense with just six goals scored.

Monarcas Morelia had not done enough in the recent transfer window to fill notable departures like Carlos Guzman and Diego Valdes. That showed throughout this season, as the team managed to succeed in the Copa MX, finishing as the first seed, but crumbled in the Liga MX.

Roberto Hernandez had a very successful tenure at Monarcas Morelia since his appointment in the 2017 Clausura tournament. The Mexican manager saved La Monarquia from relegation and made three consecutive playoff appearances with a very limited roster at his disposal.

Monarcas Morelia already announced that Gaston Obledo will serve as the interim manager, while the team seeks a permanent solution. Morelia’s next game will be this Tuesday, Feb. 26, as the team from Michoacan hosts Puebla in the round of 16 in the Copa MX.
